Ready to play
Choose a level, exercise, and round length. Missed positions get extra practice.
Beginner covers natural notes from open strings through fret 5. Intermediate extends to fret 12. Advanced adds sharps and flats through fret 12. All levels use six strings and are available immediately.
Choose 30, 60, or 120 seconds and score as many points as possible. Name the note and Find the note award one point per correct, unassisted answer. Find every instance awards one point per correct, unassisted position, even if the clock expires before you finish the question. Duplicate selections and reveals earn no points. Scores are meaningful when comparing the same level, exercise, and duration.
The clock runs continuously, including feedback pauses and time spent in another tab. At zero the round ends immediately; unanswered positions are not counted as misses. Completed questions advance automatically after brief feedback. Find every instance advances only when all positions are found or revealed. Open strings are labeled before the nut; a highlighted open-string question hides its label.
Diagram (2D) uses a rectangular neck with straight, parallel strings and a fixed 4:1 length-to-width ratio on every device. The fretboard scales to fit the available width and height without stretching. Player's view (3D) retains the tapered neck and perspective within the same proportioned area. Fret spacing follows the guitar's twelve-tone scale geometry. Both views omit fret numbers; dot inlays mark frets 3, 5, 7, and 9, with a double inlay at fret 12. The whole trainer fits on one screen without scrolling. The 2D/3D switch in the upper-right corner of the fretboard pane toggles directly between Diagram (2D) and Player's view (3D).
Player's view looks along the neck: the nut is farther away at the upper left, and higher frets approach the lower right. A maple-colored headstock with a rounded tip, sculpted waist, six inline tuners, and straight string paths extends beyond the nut, naturally cropped by the frame. The neck continues decoratively beyond the exercise range and is cropped by the frame; only positions within the selected level can be answered. The shallow fretboard face and visible near edge include side dots, with a double marker at fret 12. Diagram keeps the straight-on view. Phones and tablets must be in landscape to use the trainer; screens narrower than 641px or shorter than 380px use Diagram for easier tapping without changing your saved view preference. You can switch views or resize during a round without changing the question or clock.
The decorative headstock face is recessed behind the nut, with a curved transition and a visible wooden side. Its tuning posts and raised buttons stand above the face rather than lying flat in the fretboard plane. Resizing recalculates headstock proportions and straight string alignment without restarting the question or timer.
Keyboard: Tab into the fretboard, use arrow keys to move, and Enter or Space to select a position. Home and End move to the open string and last fret. In Name the note, use the note buttons to answer. End a round to change its level or exercise.
The trainer uses the same full-screen layout on every device. Game settings stay visible across the top. Time, score, guitar sound, and the Start, End, and Reveal buttons share a compact toolbar, with the question and answer feedback below it. The fretboard fills the middle of the screen, and Name the note answers use a row of equal-size note buttons below the fretboard. Audio failures are shown in the same reserved feedback area without moving the fretboard. Name the note shows its note buttons as soon as you select the exercise; position exercises give that space to the fretboard. Unavailable controls are disabled rather than removed. The scoreboard retains your final score and time without a separate results message; use Start to play again. The question and answer areas have reserved space so feedback cannot move the fretboard. These areas have no internal scrollbars. Level, exercise, note labels, and duration stay locked until the round ends.
The neck stays in place between questions, with reserved space for feedback.
Missed positions get extra weight in future questions, mixed with other positions. Correct answers gradually reduce that extra weight. History is kept separately for each exercise. Revealed positions need more practice, but untested positions are not treated as weaknesses.
Settings and answer history stay in this browser, without an account or device syncing. Resetting progress clears answer history, not your settings.
Optional guitar playback uses a synthesized plucked-string sound, generated in your browser without recordings or downloads.
