How to tune your guitar

Start with your phone or computer’s default microphone. Place it near your guitar, choose Start tuner, and allow microphone access. For a USB amplifier or audio interface, connect it first and select it from the audio input list. Device names may only appear after permission is granted. The tuner needs HTTPS, localhost, or a browser that permits microphone access to local files.

Pluck a single open string and let it ring, muting the other strings. In Auto mode, the tuner shows the detected note and compares it to the nearest standard guitar string. For a string that is far out of tune, select its button so the target stays fixed. Standard tuning, from the thickest string to the thinnest, is E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4.

If the display says Flat, gradually raise the string’s pitch. If it says Sharp, lower it. Make small adjustments and pluck again; do not keep tightening a string when you are uncertain about its octave. The meter turns green and says In tune when a stable reading is within five cents of the target.

For best results, use a quiet room and avoid chords, distortion, chorus, or other pitch effects. An unplugged solid-body electric guitar may be too quiet for a phone microphone: use an audible clean amp or a USB input instead. Weak, noisy, or ambiguous sounds will not produce a tuning reading. This is a standard-tuning tool with a fixed A4 reference of 440 Hz.
